with Portsmouth City Council and Giffords Consultants,
carefully |

selected monitoring points were established in 27
places for vertical |
| movement,
and 6 further positions beneath the structure, accessible
only by boat. |

In
this picture the newly constructed Gun Wharf Quay structure
can be clearly seen juxtaposed with the old Victorian Wightlink
pier on the left. The photo was taken in October 2001 before
construction of the tower begins. |

Tide level
surveys are taken at high and low tides. Low
Tide
|

The
survey of the underside of the pier has to be carried out
by boat, with a 90 minutes tide window, during which period
the tide is high enough to cover cross beams, but low enough
to access to underside of the deck. |
