| Thrapston,
Northants SITE SURVEY GPS |

A
72 acre site in Thrapston to be surveyed in just three days
offered a great opportunity the use GPS. The site, in private
ownership required a full boundary survey to determine |
| current
access
requirements, and
land use. This
was a large open site, with free access,
a perfect scenario for GPS. |

| Using
the default coding system by Leica was quick and easy to learn.
We were able to benefit from Leica's expertise on future GPS
work, where coding systems were written specifically for each
job, such as those at Woodbridge and St Athan in Wales. The
latter, for |
|
| Anglian
Water, incorporated two sites separated by more than one mile.
|
|
 |
The
site was split by the A14 which passed close to an old quarry.
Boundary detail any levels were taken, which included major
trees. With
one Base Station in a secure compound, surveyors were free
to |
|
roam.
In places,
where a radio link to the base station was not available,
a mobile phone link was required to capture data. Data could
be collected to relate the survey to ordinance survey datum
and co-ordinates.

| Close
to the old Railway Station building and yard, the site ran
adjacent a disused Railway line. A full photographic record
was produced, showing boundary details such as fence condition,
and
|
|
| photograph
positions shown on the final plan.
We have
since carried out further work for the same client on privately
owned areas of land around Northamptonshire. Also defining
boundaries, the total area being more than 182 acres. |

GPS
was used to link each end of the 5km section to OS datum.
One of the first project to be carried out using GPS together
with conventional surveying methods, |
|
and using a specially written coding system, data was also
collected at the main site, which included residential areas
in government ownership. |

| Covering
a large area, details of property position and levels
together with the infrastructure were required to assess
the current usage. In addition to GPS data, details
were carefully recorded by |
|
| members
of the team to ensure a full assessment
of buildings and infrastructure had been gathered. |
|

Tree
canopy cover and work close to houses and other obstructions
were found to be major considerations in the limited use of
GPS. All these factors are now carefully used in determining
which |
|
projects are best suited for GPS. |
|
| Control
stations were linked to the GPS control and then extended
to include service detail over a large area. Checks were made
to determine the accuracy of the GPS was consistent, and the
results were |
|
|
used to assess the suitability of GPS with infrastructure
work. |
